With all the talk of stigma in my article published in August and the feedback from the brothers and sisters who read it, it got me thinking of practical ways to address this as well as the mental health issues that are referred to when we talk about stigma.

We all run from mental health because of the connotations that it has. Typically when we think of mental health, we think of the more extreme symptoms; delusions, hearing voices and a complete lack of contact with reality. But what about the more common ‘everyday’ symptoms; those that I can almost guarantee that everyone reading this has gone through at some point in their life? We all get stressed at times; it’s part of life, part of Allah’s test and in fact, it is said that Allah tests those he loves most

It was narrated by Abu Huraira  that God’s Messenger sawsaid:

“If God wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.” 1

The more you are tested that more you are loved by Allah SWT, partly because it expiates your sins

The Prophet saw said:

“There is nothing that befalls a believer, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allah will record one good deed for him and will remove one bad deed from him.” 2

Let’s face it. We’ve all sinned at some point in our lives, so it would be a mercy from Allah SWT to experience something that will ultimately expiate our bad deeds. Hence, to go through stress and trial is nothing to be frowned upon because this is Allah’s Mercy. If only people could view the trials of mental health in this way, then maybe we would have a much better opinion of those going through mental health problems, because AllahSWT loves them and is erasing their sins for what they are enduring.

The beauty of Islam however, is that the Quran and Sunnah equip us with all that we need to be able to cope with such difficult situations and, insha Allah, I will highlight some in this article. I also came to realise that in accepting that we all go through some form of mental health problems at some point in our lives (yes, stress is a mental health problem, and yes, you most likely have experienced it at some point in your life, so yes, you have, at some point have had some experience, however small, of what it’s like to have a mental health problem. If you are one to stigmatize about mental health, then you might even feel insulted by this comment, but if you are able to accept the teaching in Islam regarding mental health, e.g. expiation of sins, then you will feel blessed), reflecting on those times will help you to empathize at least a little with people who are going through more extreme stress and this will ultimately help with acceptance of people with mental health problems because you have some insight of what it’s like to walk in their shoes.

On a different note, you might also then think about how much worse many others have it. Look at our brothers and sisters in Gaza, or in other war torn parts of the world such as Syria, etc., and the stress they go through; forced into being part of a war but unable to escape. The Prophet saw advised us to look to those who are worse off and this really helps us to appreciate the blessings in our life.

‘Contemplate those who have less than you and not those who have more than you, lest you belittle the favors of Allah conferred upon you’.  3

So, whilst you might have been stressed, there is more than likely someone else out there who is going through more stress than you are and you can be grateful that Allah SWT spared you from such stress. In fact, what you are going through is relatively minor. That said, this is no excuse to play down the experience of stress, however big or small. We all need to know how to cope with it and Islam has the solutions to this.

The first point is that we need to be active in stress management. Whilst Allah SWTis in control of everything and will be the one to alleviate our stress, this does not mean we should sit back and wait for that to happen. We need to actively seek ways to manage our stress.

“Verily Allah does not change men’s condition unless they change their inner selves” (Ar-Rad, 13: 11)

This is all very well saying that we should manage our stress, but how can we do this? Blog Post-Inside poster-Stress management

Keeping in mind that Allah SWT is in control, what we can do is to control what we can, that is, our response to the stressful situation. It is well known in psychological literature that lack of control can be a cause of distress, so by controlling what you can gives some sense of empowerment and feelings of positivity. As Muslims, this should be relatively easy. Keeping on top of our obligatory duties and offering voluntary ones  will bring us a sense of peace and relaxation.

“… without doubt in the remembrance (Zikr) of Allah do hearts find tranquility” (Ar-Rad, 13:28)

Medical literature supports the benefits of this with findings that praying and listening to the Qur’an have positive physiological effects in terms of reduced heart rate and blood pressure which are typical symptoms of a reduced level of arousal or stress.

“When prayer uplifts or calms, it inhibits cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine – hormones that flow out of the adrenal glands in response to stress. These fight-or-flight chemicals, released over time, can compromise the immune system, upping the odds of developing any number of illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, peptic ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disorder (IBS).” (Koenig)

In fact, these findings have also been reproduced in non-Muslims also (El Kadi).

“O mankind! There has come to you a direction from you Lord, and a healing for (the disease in your) heart, and for those who believe a guidance, and mercy” (Yunus, 10:57)

All the Prophets also went through times of great stress and through such times they always remembered AllahSWT and found peace in remembering HimSWT. A practice also followed by our beloved Prophet saw .

“The Prophet once said that in prayer, he would find rest and relief (Nasai). He would also regularly ask for God’s forgiveness and remain in prostration during prayer praising God (Tasbeeh) and asking for His forgiveness”  4

Prophet Muhammad saw also advised his followers to make specific du’a during stressful times, such as:

“Allah is sufficient for us, and He is an excellent guardian, and we repose our trust in Allah.”

“Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return. O Allah, I beseech you for the reward of my hardship. Reward me, and compensate me for it with something good.”

A part of the beauty of Islam in this respect is that we are prescribed prayer 5 times daily. So, for 5 times a day, we are obliged to abandon our worldly affairs and the stresses that accompany it and seek solace and peace with AllahSWT in prayer.

Often, we can get too caught up in our busy lives to really take a step back and wonder at Allah’s creation. Taking some time out to really pay attention to what’s around us can have this incredibly relaxing effect. Notice the beauty in Allah’s creation, from the leaves on a tree, the beautiful blossoming flower, the tweeting bird, the sky at night or a beautiful sunset. All of this was created by Allah SWTand is under His control. Allahu Akbar! Be grateful that He gave you the opportunity to view such wonderful things. Just 5 minutes a day is enough to marvel at the creation; it can be incredibly relaxing, especially at the end of a hard day!

These are all very simple, and perhaps obvious stress management techniques, but sometimes, we just need to put these things into perspective and see the positives in our daily stressors and remember the benefits of using Islamic techniques to manage them. These are just a handful, but insha’Allah,  next time I will get the chance to offer some more stress management tips.

I will be giving a FREE webinar on stress management in early January (date to be confirmed). If you are interested in attending, please leave your email via the following link and I will get back to you with a link closer to the time, insha’Allah.

Great to read such comforting words. Even greater was to read ur introduction in the end. I am so pleased.mashAllah MashAllah…
i myself am going through hard time.. Alhamdulillah Allah gives us so many conforts by saying “His rehmah is more than His wrath”.as in Quran ,every problem that comes our way is a result of what our hands sent forward; means what we earned and yet again Allah does not desert us and He says : “with every Difficulty there is Ease”. and He says: your Rub has not forsaken you.and He will give you that you will be pleased”. I pray to Allah He heals the scarred hearts brought about by our own deeds. Ameen. Nice commenting here 🙂

Marsha Alla!!…great to learn about you thru your introduction.

All of us face stressful situations in our lives, and handling them with ease is certainly a big challenge. Reciting or listening to holy Quran, and salat are best strategies. But does a woman handle such situations in times when she is not ineligible to read/listen to Quran or offer salat? Kindly advise.

Jazakallah Khairan for that wonderful article.

Jazakallahu khair for your comments. Indeed, handling stress can be such a huge challenge, but is very important and this is why I am trying to offer these tips to try and make it easier, insha Allah.

As for what a woman can do during times when they are unable to make Salat or read the Qur’an, there are a number of other things that she can do that are permissable during this time. She can listen to the Qur’an, read the tafsir or seek Islamic knowledge. She can also make Dhikr and Du’a. Insha Allah by doing such things we can maintain a strong link with our Creater and receive comfort in these alternative means of worship. I hope this helps.

Getting through difficult times -what are lessons from Quran and sunnah;human beings are born weak- susceptible to pressures, sadness, frustrations ..need strong bnase of know;edge ,faith to overcome the tremors ;Trials and tribulations is part of this earthly life, and no nation or an individual can escape from them when Allah the Almighty tests by afflictions, whoever He wishes of His servants, with whatever He wishes, whenever He wishes and however He wishes.
A person’s life in this world is never uniform, periods of happiness and dismay, strength and weakness, wealth and poverty, health and sickness etc fluctuate.
An immediate depressed (sad) mood is a normal reaction to disappointments or losses, as sons of Adam are born weak.
Many of us think , “these afflictions”, “Why Me”? So time to hold your soul to account, review your slate; zakat ,sadaqas, prayers, fasting, mistakes , etc.Satan can whisper in anyone’s soul-can inject fear and initiate t doubts in our hearts and minds when he or she sees surroundings, people happy in worldly life, enjoying . This is a sign of man’s weakness and his need for his Lord, and shows that he cannot succeed unless he realizes his need for his Lord and starts beseeching Him. When problems start afflicting any one of us, he is expected to, “seek aid in patience and prayer”, and “those who are patient will be given their reward in full, beyond reckoning.” (Quran)
The ignorant person due to lack of Imaan(faith) finds himself in misery, fear and grief and helplessness. He or she forgets Allah has decreed these matters to occur and the decisions are His, and His alone.
One can never feel completely at ease unless he has firm belief that whatever has afflicted him was already pre ordained.
    ” No misfortune can happen on earth or in your souls but is recorded in the book of decree – before We bring it into existence“(Quran 57;22).And Allah (S) says (which means);
” Certainly, We shall test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits; but give glad tidings to the patient – those who, when afflicted with calamity say,
“Truly to Allah we belong, and truly to Him shall we return.” it is those who will be awarded blessings and mercy from their Lord; and it is those who are the guided ones.”
[ Quran 2:155-157 ] i think all my brothers and sisters should read QADAR -PREDESTINATION in detail ..sixth pilllar of our faith and imaan–As part of that belief, we should, therefore, recognize that Allah does what He wills for reasons that are only known to Him. Any attempt to comprehend the wisdom of it all using our limited faculties, or to understand how our current situation fits in His overall plan can only lead us to erroneous conclusions resulting in increased frustrations .

We, as Muslims, should accept Allah’s Decree both as it manifests itself around us and in our lives. Worship at times of hardship and tribulation has a special flavour and a special reward. insha allah-Allaah will not leave the believers in the state in which you are now, until He distinguishes the wicked from the good”:[Aal ‘Imraan 3:179]

“If God wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials”. This is so true. I’ve managed to contemplate and realized that Allah is teaching me, in a sense of guiding me to understand little by little. Since I’m such a stubborn creature, Allah keeps putting me into troubles, some are so frustrating and others may look easy, but my reactions are mostly in form of anger instead of sadness. Now it is a bit easier for me to stop myself and say, “Dhian, Allah wanted this to happen, it will expiate your sins”. All I can say is Alhamdulillaah…. I hope I will always remember this, because there are times I do forget.

jazakallahu khair for commenting. Unfortunately i have been unable to find the Arabic version of this particular du’a, but i have the Arabic versions of some other similar du’a that the Prophet (SAW) used in distressful times.

(O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for a blink of an eye, and rectify for me all of my affairs. None has the right to be worshiped except You)

(O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men)

As a Muslim, though with no in depth Islamic knowledge, but from what we read from other Islamic scholars like Dr Zakir insha’Allah means to create Allah instead of the normal if Allah will. Please note, it is written as in sha Allah, with hope and due respect we shall take correct this in’sha’Allaah. Thank you once again and may ALLAAH continue to uplift Islam and the Muslims. Best regards!

Wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakahtuh, amin to your du’a and jazakallahu khair for your comments. We certainly are in need of some uplifting during these current times and i think we just need to keep these Islamic teachings and practices consistently in mind and insha Allah we are all capable of managing stress by the Grace of Allah. By learning from Islamic scholars like you say, insha Allah we can become more knowledgeable in Islam and we will better able to practice what we learn in the correct manner. May Allah increase us all in knowledge.

    Salam,

MASHALLAH it’s a blessing and an honor to have scholars such as you discussing the real issues in our society. I think we all struggle with these issues day to day but sometimes feel whatever sin we commit is a result of the depression, so you feel unworthy of the Almighty and most Mercifully Allah. Personally feel that if I did not have Allah I would have found it impossible to live a normal life. Thank you for your knowledge may Allah bless you and your family.

I know everything is written, Allah knows what trials we will go through, but what about if your husband has cheated on you? You are suffering so much that you just can’t seem to get over it, and it has destroyed your life, even though he has turned to Allah and asked him for forgiveness. Does this also come from Allah? Is this also QADAR?

Allah tests His servants in so many different ways and forbearing the difficulties that we may face as a result of other’s misdeeds could also be one of them. It is up to us to respond to this in the way prescribed by our Creator and put ourselves forward in the best possible manner despite the difficulties they may have put us through however tricky this might be. Always keep in mind that however hard it is to face such trials with sabr there are always people in worse situations, if not within the relationship but in other situations, facing poverty, for example. Allah blesses each an everyone of us in someway and it for us to realise this and appreciate it, even if it be for something simple that we take for granted such as good health, eyesight, a loving family, food on the table…etc…

All stress because of less yaqeen on Allah because all time we speak and think about material things. So if you want to release stress please think about the power of Allah. Every thing in the hand of Allah. Allah can change any thing at any time. Speak about the power of Allah. Give dawaa to others then yaqeen will come inside you. More dawaa you will give more yaqeen will come inshaa Allah. Try to seprate yourself 2 or 3 days in month stay in masjid or stay with righteaous people, stay away from sins, do zikr and make dua.

Excellent. I like the part when you relate “focus on what you can control to gain sense of positivity” with “5 times daily prayer”.
Sometimes one ignore to empower their prayer during stress times and dwell the negative thoughts even in the prayer. I think thats why muslim remain in long stress period.
One should fight to ignore the negativity and focus in prayer. It is hard. Its long process.

Dear Hannah. One of best articles in Islamic counselling and spiritual advice. I think Muslims have all remedies for all diseases of hearts and minds but problem is some of us do not know how to benefit from Quran and Sunnah. or do not approach the Quran and Sunnah as the pious people did and do now. No doubt Quran and Sunnah could heal all heart diseases
You have good skills and you can be a great assert for chaplaincy courses around the UK. You could teach all these in chaplaincy classes. There is a good demand for qualified people in chaplaincy. I really appreciate the way you have written this article so meaningful . May Allah increase your knowledge

    Assalamu alaikum sister,

It was amazing artical to read, I always keen ro read on this topic as I’m often the victim of mental stress/week heart.

I have gone through a lot of difficulty when it comes through stress & as I’m very Negetive person which I feel got it from my mother. After I stared practicing Islam I have learnt a lot on how to overcome or should I say handle it.

Below are some of the quality I have. (To some extend now I’m able to realise its delusional/Satan whisper but still fall prey to it)

    1. When something concerns me (stress), I keep thinking about it repeatedly, regardless of the effort I put to stop thinking,

    2. I rethink and make up stories or build assumption which is completely base on negativity

    3. Sometime it gone to some extend that I stated feeling hatred/ill feeling towards few people based on the assumption I make, (the stupidity is I believe it as true)

Since your its your expertise is psychology with the light of Islan I think could understand it better. Need your advice so I don’t have to end up like what happen to my mom (I have mention it below)

    1. This kind of psychological pressure come when my imaan is good (what I mean is I often Remember Allah & do more act of worship)

    2. And I’m often feel better when if I reduce the act of worship, with little engagement in the worldly affair.

Herefore I end up loosing much of my imaan. ( I mean the level of thaqwa)

(I have seen similar pattern, this is how my mom experienced it & end up mentally ill had to consult psychiatrist & medication now Al Hamdulillah she is fine. Now she just do what is obligatory)
