‘Fatimah looked at the calendar.  “Only 3 days left”, she said to herself with a heavy sigh.’

Yes.  Only a few days before the month of blessings and forgiveness will depart.  Only a few days before Ramadan is over. None of us knows if our fasts and ‘ibadah have been accepted by AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala and the question remains unanswered till the Day of Judgment.  In spite of this, there is an excitement peeking out from the corners of our heart. Yes! Eid is round the corner! It is a gift from AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala to us for one month of non stop and ‘rigorous’ ‘ibadah that we have done. But this gift demands a duty from us: obedience and worship in celebration too. As Ibn Rajab rahimahullaah said,

Eid is not for the one who wears new clothes. Eid is for the one whose obedience rises. Eid is not for the one with beautiful clothes and fine means of transport.  Eid is for the one whose sins are forgiven.” [al-Lata’if, p. 371]

The question is, how? How do we please AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala in our celebrations? You will find the answer in the following practical ways, inshaAllaah.

1. Tahajjud:

Before we even think of giving an excuse for tahajjud, let us ponder upon the following hadith qudsi:

AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala says,

I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen and no ear has heard, nor has it occurred to the human heart.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala has something more in store for His pious slaves which is not within our imagination! But how do we attain this bounty?

AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala also says,

“They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.” (Surah As-Sajdah, (32):16-17)

What more incentive do we need? Make tahajjud an addiction and be among those described in the verse!

Make tahajjud an addiction and be among those to experience the unseen treasures of Allaah!

2. Don’t Skip Fajr Salaah:

I need to go for Eid Salaah later, so let me sleep now.

I just woke up for tahajjud!

I will offer Fajr at home today.

Allaah is Merciful, He will forgive me if I only skip it for a day.

Have we heard these common excuses before?

The 5 daily prayers are fardh brothers and sisters! If we are searching for excuses to avoid Fajr, then we should better describe ourselves as hypocrites as the ProphetSAW said that the hardest prayer for the hypocrites is Fajr and ‘Isha. (Bukhari). Eid-blogimage

3.  Follow the Sunnah:

There are many practices that the ProphetSAW observed once the moon for Eid had been sighted:

  1. It is mustahabb to recite takbeer during the night of Eid from sunset on the last day of Ramadan until the Imam comes to lead the prayer.
  2. Eat an odd number of dates before leaving for the Eid Salaah just as the ProphetSAW did. (Saheeh, At-Tirmidhi)
  3. Dress and look your best. This is for men. Women should observe proper hijaab when  going for Salaah or outside. Don’t begin your Eid by being a source of fitnah!
  4. Zakaat al-fitr has to be given on Eid before the Eid Salaah. This is binding on every Muslim. The prescribed amount is 1 sa’ of the staple food of one’s area on behalf of every member of the household. (Bukhari)
  5.  It is preferable to go from one route to Eid Salaah and return on a different route as done by the Prophet SAW .  (Bukhari)

4.  Eid Salaah:

The Prophet SAW used to take his wives and daughters to the two Eids. Umm Atiyah said: “We were ordered to go out with the single and menstruating women to the two Eids in order to witness the good and the supplications of the Muslims. The menstruating women though would stay away from the prayer area.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Sisters, please don’t dress up like a bride to the masjid! If you are going to the masjid to obey the commands of AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala by disobeying Him in your attire, what use will your obedience be other than adding negative points to your kiraman katibin?

5.  Avoid Mixed Gatherings:

Oh, we are just relatives! There is no harm in us being together!” There is. Because AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala knows and we don’t. AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala, in His Wisdom has given us a precise list of our mahrams and non mahrams (Surah Nur, (24):31) If your family is hosting an Eid party, make sure that the sisters and brothers have separate rooms to sit in, each room having different hosts to attend to them. If you have been invited to a mixed gathering which you cannot avoid, occupy a room/space where there are no members of the opposite sex. Inform the host gently that you are not comfortable mixing with the opposite gender. By this, you have done a deed to please AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala and a little bit of da’wah too!

6.  Don’t Skip Salaah:

We get so busy celebrating that we forget that the time for Salaah is due. When AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala did not excuse the warriors on the battle field from Salaah, how can we think of skipping it? If you have planned an outing for Eid, make sure you select a spot that has a masjid nearby. Schedule your plans for the day around the Salaah timings. You could also set alarms on your phone for each Salaah so that even if Shaytaan causes you to forget, you have a back up ready.

7.  Involving in Haraam Activities:

Once Ramadan is over, theentertainment industry’ comes out from the cupboards! AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala did not restrict obedience and ‘ibadah to Him for a month alone.

Allaah did not restrict obedience and ‘ibadah to Him for Ramadan alone.

If you were successful in refraining from all sorts of entertainment and haraam activities in Ramadan, you can easily continue it further. Allaah made it easy for us to stay away from it and this makes it incumbent upon us to show gratitude to Him by refraining from them for ever. Remember, Eid is not an excuse to disobey AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala but an occasion to thank Him for His endless bounties.

Follow these few simple steps and feel a sense of satisfaction of having celebrated the gift from AllaahAllah Subhanahu-wa-Taala in accordance with His pleasure.

Taqabballaahu minna wa minkum

Eid Mubarak!

JazakAllah khairan kaseera for this beautiful writeup. I was praying to Allah (swa) for being able to wear jilbaab in eid gatherings and to avoid mixed gatherings. But had difficulty in sticking to the jilbaab. Now that I have read how to practice this through your article I feel guided by Allah (swa). Alhumdolillah. SubhanAllah.
