The Creation of Angels

How are angels created?

Angels are created from light. This is not stated in the Quran, but is confirmed in the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) as ‘Aa’ishah reported: "The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)) said: ‘The angels are created from light, just as the jinn are created from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from that which has been described to you.’"[1]

So, the angels and jinn represent two different beings from the spiritual world. From the Islamic perspective, there are 3 different species of intelligent beings:

  • Mankind – though they may be visible and function in the visible world, their soul inhabits the world of invisible and rational beings;
  • the Angels; and
  • the Jinn

The angels are invisible to us normally; however it has been mentioned by the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and other Prophets that the revelations which were brought by angel Jibreel were brought at times when he was in the form of a man. On one occasion that man was visible to the companions themselves, and on other occasions, he wasn’t. However, there are amongst Allah’s creatures that are able to see the angels, even when they are invisible. Abu Hurayrah, radiyallahu anhu, reported, “If you hear a rooster crow, ask Allah for His grace for it saw an angel.”[2]
