Is it right to call someone a munafiq (hypocrite)?
With regards to calling someone a hypocrite, it’s basically like calling someone a kaafir.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If somebody accuses another of Fusuq [by calling him 'Fasiq' i.e., a wicked person] or accuses him of Kufr, such an accusation will revert to him [i.e., the accuser] if his companion [the accused] is innocent.”
It’s the same concept. We are not allowed to call anyone such names, especially in this time. Shaykh Albani said that this is not a time to even boycott individuals because of the weak state of the ummah. Boycotting is something that they used to do when a person would commit sin. They would boycott such a person. They would boycott or not talk to him until he turns back to his deen. If a person has qualities of a munafiq, then we try to correct him, give him naseehah, In shaa' Allah, but we cannot call such people names. It would cause a lot of fitnah.
And Allah knows best.
