Who are the Khawarij? How can we recognize them in today’s world?
The Khawarij do not exist like they existed in the past as a sect that had followers and a leader. The Khawarij of the past have passed and are not present now. However, there are groups now that have characteristics of the Khawarij, but, are not considered Khawarij, as they do not have the beliefs of the Khawarij. There are groups in the Muslim Ummah who have some characteristics of the Khawarij, such as being harsh, following the literal text of the Qur’an and Sunnah, and so on and so forth. So, you cannot call them Khawarij, because if you call them Khawarij, you are saying that they are from the dogs of the Hellfire, because it was narrated that Ibn Awfa said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The Khawarij are the dogs of Hell.”
So, you cannot say something like this unless you have proven that these are the Khawarij whom the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) had spoken of.
And Allah knows best.
