What level of knowledge do we need to have in order to engage in da'wah?
Even an ayah!!
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr in a long hadith that the Prophet (ﷺ) said,
"Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence."
In other words teach what you know; don't try to teach what you don't know. Stick to what you know. If someone asks you a question and you don't know the answer, don't try to say things which just shut them up, but not true. Later on when they find out the correct answer they will think badly of you. So better say, "I don't have an answer to your question, will check and let you know later Insha’Allah", than just win the argument by making false statements.
However, you need to know the basics of Islam; five pillars of Islam, 6 pillars of eeman, goals of worship, why fast, why Salah and so on. Non-Muslims would come to you asking why you fast, why should I deprive myself from food. That's what you yourself should know, the reason behind your fast.
