Is al-muntaqim a name or an attribute of Allah? Also, I would like to know a book or a link of a website that can provide me with the authentic known 99 names of Allah.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah says:
The name al-Muntaqim (The Retributor) is not from among Allah's most Beautiful Names which have been affirmed by the Prophet (ﷺ), but rather it has been mentioned in the Qur'an restrictively, such as Allah's statement:
إِنَّا مِنَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ مُنتَقِمُونَ
"Indeed, We will take retribution from the criminals."
And His statement:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ۬ ذُو ٱنتِقَامٍ۬
"Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution."
Hence, al-Muntaqim is not one of Allah's names; however Allah can be attributed with the attribute of retribution, because this is an attribute that has been attributed to Allah in the Qur'an and Sunnah. And Allah knows the best.
The following book by Sh. Ibn Uthaymin is excellent for the study of the rules pertaining to Allah's names and attributes and this book also includes 99 authentic names of Allah that Uthaymin deduced from the Qur'an and Sunnah:
 [Al-Sajdah 32:22]
 [Ibrahim 14:47]< Back to Questions
