A few weeks ago, I found myself facing an internal crisis; a guilty conscience ate away at me restlessly for days. A feeling of hopelessness overcame me as I sensed my heart being engulfed in coatings of rust and filth. I imagined it to be like a lantern upon which layers and layers of dust and dirt continued to accumulate, and today the thick tar-like coating was making it impossible to light the way any longer. I could feel the light in my heart flickering. Dimming. Diffusing.

“No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning” Surah Mutafifeen (83:14)

Desperate and heavy, my wilting heart cried out, “My Rabb! Cleanse me of this raan that has covered me. Show me the way out. Kindle Your light and the light of the Qur’an in me, ya Nur, ya AllahSWT!”

For several months, I had felt myself losing more and more control of my tongue; it would ramble on with idle talk, arguments and would say things that I would regret the second after I said them. I knew that it was in fact my tongue which was most responsible for rusting my vulnerable heart. I needed to regain control of this tongue. I needed to restrain it. Tame it.

Truly, my Rabb is near and responsive. Truly, my Rabb is in full view of what this poor slave of His is going through. Just moments after my heart cried out, my Rabb responded. And the response to curing my spiritually suffocated heart was none other than remembering it’s Creator… Dhikr.  surgical heart inside

Ills of the Tongue

Over the months, I had found myself using my tongue in ways that I would often regret. Some of these ways included:

  • Talking excessively without a purpose
  • Speaking impulsively often driven by emotion
  • Indulging in gossip
  • Arguing

The root of each of these verbal-related ills laid in the fact that I did not think before I spoke. I did not filter or sensor my words. I just rambled on, not pausing to reflect over the consequences my speech would cause, nor on the question of whether it was even necessary for me to respond. Talking excessively got me labeled as a “chatterbox”, while speaking impulsively caused me regret. Indulging in or even sitting around gossip sowed within me seeds of ill-will towards others, while arguing only caused me to waste my breath.

The Treatment: Curing the Heart through Dhikr

When I first began treating my rusting heart, I chose Istighfar as my default Dhikr. The first hour was the most difficult, as the wiswaas of shaytan were quite strong, “that’s good enough.. isn’t your mouth tired?… how much more?”, and my tongue was still getting used to the sudden change. I knew consistency was key, so I continued throughout the rest of the evening. Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah. I pushed myself to keep it up the next day as well; from the moment I awoke to the time I lay back in bed the following night. Slowly, my tongue got into the routine.

Dhikr had begun its treatment in taming this tongue of mine, and the effects were incredible!

The Result

Within three days of persistently implementing this treatment, I felt myself finally starting to get a grip on my speech – for the first time in months! Amazingly, the tongue was not the only organ that this treatment was curing, for I had also begun to feel a sliver of light in my heart as well, walhamdulillah!

I noticed a series of changes stirring within me as my Dhikr-occupied tongue gradually learned to pause, filter, then speak.

  • Using less of my tongue meant using more of my ears, and thus listening to others molded my personality to be one in which others could confide.
  • Being pre-occupied in Dhikr, my habit of talking excessively faded away.
  • The faster my heart beat, the more Dhikr spilled onto my tongue: one tasbeeh per heartbeat; this greatly reduced my urge to speak impulsively in anger and emotion.
  • Being constantly reminded of the presence of the One whom I was mentioning, caused me to humble myself; I no longer cared to prove myself right and win arguments, because He SWT alone knew best about who was more correct.
  • Upon hearing or thinking of any negative mention of a person, my heart would urge my tongue to withhold and instead I’d find myself making du’a for that person; replacing any ill-feelings with well-wishing.

Within a few days, Dhikr had completely transformed my heart and personality! Though the occasional disagreements and arguments still inevitably occurred post-treatment, the frequency of their occurrence had greatly dwindled down walhamdulillah!

Before this experience, Dhikr was just something I would quickly mumble after saying my salams in salah, before running off. Prior to this, I had not realized how powerful the treasures of this incredible armor actually were, for it was the only thing that revived this withering heart of mine.

“Those who believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah SWT. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah SWT hearts are assured.” Surah Ra’d (13:28)

What are ways in which we can prevent our hears from getting rusted? Please share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments section below. 🙂 We would love to hear what you have to say.

Definitely very true. This article hit home.

When I first started zikr I couldn’t even recite properly. This woke me up that how will I recite kalima at the time of my death.
your tongue , mouth, body and soul all work together as a team. If you neglect one the rest of your body parts suffer.

Now I make sure that I’m consistent and I have found a great difference.
Your body reacts to how much you connect to Allah.

This applies also to reciting the quran .
If you only recite in Ramadan only
      you will have difficulties.

i got this from sh. assim al hakeem, that doing things for the sake of allah alone will increase your emaan and the increase of emaan will make you do more things for the sake of allah. Its cyclical, both action and state support each other and are directly proportional. So when emaan becomes low, force your self to do more acts just for the sake of ALLAH and keep that deed hidden from every one. JAZAKALLAH KHAIR

    Assalam Alaykum,
I would like to thank the sister who authored this valuable article, may Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala reward you the best of his rewards for your wonderful effort fir his deen.

For years, I’ve been going through depression, unhappiness and felt greatly lost. It was until February this year that I found my path towards actual self realisation, which brought me all the happiness and enthusiasm I needed in my life.

I joined a whatsapp Islamic group, met some great muslim brothers who were very passionate about sharing islamic messages ( articles & videos).
My turning point was the day I saw a lecture on repentance which was delivered by a Saudi Sheikh – Khalid Ibn Muhammad Al raashid. It was really emotional how he explained the situation wrongdoers will go through right from the time the angel of death comes to them to when they stand in front of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
To this very day I’m writing this, tears flow off my eyes whenever I play the video.
I’ve also become a great admirer of the Sheikh, since most of his lectures found on YouTube are on matters related to repentance, keeping away from sins and bad friends, rememberance of death, importance of Salah etc.
I immensely got affected by thise powerful words from the Qur’an and Ahadeeth to the extent that I gave up on so many sinful acts which seemed normal before, I’ve become observant of my 5 prayers plus the nawafil on time and in congregation.
From thosedays, my life has drastically changed in ways I couldn’t have imagined before. My income has tripled from the same month I started carefully observing my prayers in congregation. My health has improved and I feel energetic throughout the day, different from before. I also used to procrastinate alot, Alhamdulillah, I’m over with that too.
To sum up, according to my experience, for a heart to get illuminated by pure Eiman, one has to seek knowledge by any means comfortable with him/her, as in my case I chose lectures by Sheikh Khalid. Secondly, one has to stand firm in repealing sins no matter how minor they seem. Thirdly, I suggest should be given the first priority when doing Aamal saaliha, in turn, the Salah will forbid us committing sins as Allah SW affirms in the Glorious Quran

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala bless all of us with his guidance, may He increase us in knowledge and accept our deeds – Aamin

    Hassan Ali

Nice article, Mashallah. Sister, I would to like to add one thing in ‘Dhikr’. Verily, It is the key of a healthy heart. As prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “”There is in the body a lump of flesh – if it becomes good, the whole body becomes good and if it becomes bad, the whole body becomes bad. And indeed it is the heart.” If you do dhikr as much as possible, then no matter how harsh is your present circumstances is, you’ll find peace, tranquility n happiness deep inside in your heart. And best of all the Dhikr ‘remembrance of Allah’ is reading, learning the book of Allah n reflecting it’s meaning n make it close to our personal life. Surely “Dieases of the heart combine between two: Doubt n Desires, n Quran is the cure for both” -Ibn Al-Qayyim (r.a.)

It really touched me so profoundly. With the passing weeks, I really find myself in a rollercoaster being spiritually high this week and then finding myself on the trough the next week. Listening to some recitation of Qur’an or listening some sirah of the Prophet (P.A.U.H) and the companions gives me the energy to shake off the rust that is covering my heart and climb up to the peak. Another equation which I discovered is that my happiness, content, understanding of lessons, getting-along-with-people, every aspect of my life was directly propotional to the level of Khushu’ in my Salah….And perhaps the greatest source of the ‘rust’, for youth in particular, is the Lustful desires that The Satan is decorating infront of their heartz…Jazakallah Ukhti for sharing with us such a wonderful experience….

I was just going through something very similar and then I found this in my mail box. Yes the heart really does need to get cleansed from the raan that Allah mentions in the Quran. Little sins keep accumulating until you no longer feel guilty of doing them, and when a Muslim starts to see a sin as small Allah see’s it as great (I read that in a Hadith). We shouldn’t look at the sins, rather we should remember how Great the one we are disobeying is. Astagfir’Allah….. may Allah help us overcome, and help us have self control and determination and iman until our last breaths INSHA’ALLAH RAB AL-ALAMEEN.

    Jazak Allah Khaier for this

Controlling the tongue is indeed challenging. I find wudoo calms teer. I find that learning the meaning of verses or surahs in the Quran makes us aware of the consequences of such actions. This also increases khushoo in our salah!

Your article was very timely. I was just in that state when you reminded me, by the Grace of Allah! wal hamdulillah!

I heard this just today from someone in our community who had done some research on djinn and black magic and its cure. It was mentioned that a djinn was questioned by an exorcist “so why did you leave the one you were with?” the djinn mentioned “because she used to be constantly in dhikr, asking for Allah’s forgiveness, going …astagfiruAllah, astagfiruAllah, astagfiruAllah … all the time. That really did me in!”

Just to add few points from my personal experience to cure the disease of heart.
We need to get involved in dawah activity, which would constantly require Praise of Allah, which will boost our imaan..
And Secondly praying salah on time with Jamaat and pondering few minutes after Jamaat in the creation of Allah will also boost over imaan and will inn sha Allah cure the disease of heart..

When humanbeing commits sins his/her heart fills with evil, evil or heart attack is same. this world is mixture of good and evil people, ones guilt of sinner get activated anytime may be by looking good people means muslim/momen, he/she gets confused, now he/she is calling Allah SWT name. if he tries with Dhikir tablets to get out the evil from heart, if he/she concentrates with dihkir in morning and night and make lot of supplications then evil will come out from heart and Rahaman tries to occupy your heart and because of Rahaman you feel happiness, your heart lightens and you will enjoy your future life even though if you have no money, no property.

    Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa barakatuhu,
I usually don’t comment on any blog even if I liked them (as I have to leave my name there), but this one was talking about me actually. I could feel it.
There was a time when I used to be ‘Movie buff’, ‘Chatter box’, ‘Short-Tempered’ and what not!!!
But, Alhamdulillah, Allah gave me Hidaayat, His Guidance, without which I would have lost myself somewhere in this world. But Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah.
For me, it was not just my tongue that I needed to control but also my ‘Nafs’ – Anger, Love for Movies, songs, TV soaps etc.
For me the first powerful dua was ‘Audhu billah’, the moment I used to get angry, I would sit if I am standing, would lie if I am sitting and would say Audhu billahi Minash Shaytaan Nir Rajeem, I would keep repeating it until my anger was gone, Alhamdulillah. It really helped me to control my anger and now Alhamdulillah people ask me, “Are you the same person?” And my love for Allah only increase, because without His Hidayat I would not have been able to do it.
My second weapon was the sacred months, I would not watch TV or hear songs during Ramadhaan and tamed myself to control my love for it before the Month of Ramadhaan (Shabaan) and after the Month of Ramadhan (Shawwal). I would not watch it even before the Month of Hajj (Dhul Qida) and the Month after it (Muharram), Safar and Rajab were two of the sacred month, so there was no question of doing any such things then. But when outside these Months Satan used to whisper and my ears used to hear it (though Alhamdulillah, Allah has already strengthened my will power), but my heart decided to implement Bismillah. I made it my habit (and still is) to say Bismillah before doing anything, I would say Bismillah and would click on the songs’ folder and my heart will ask, “Are you going to hear the Satanic voice with Allah’s name?” The realization made me to close the folder itself, Alhamdulillah. Now Alhamdulillah, music gives me headache.
After taming these difficult Nafs, Allah made it easy for me to control my tongue with daily adhkaar –
    and obviously, Astaghfirullah.
Adhkaar really helps and yes implementing simple Sunnah in day-to-day life really makes the difference!!!
Yaa Muqallibal Quloob Thabbit Qalbee ‘alaa Deenik.
“Oh turner of the hearts (Allah, the Most High), keep our hearts firm on your religion”, Aameen.
Jazakallahu Khairan Katheera for sharing this beautiful article.

About four months ago, I have started to embrace Zikhr, all because of the fact that I realised that all was not well with my spirituality, a number of sad events took place and I suddenly made a dua asking Allah to help me and the reply was Zikhr, which I knew but did not put it into practice on a daily basis. I was passing through the same phase since yesterday and was unable to dig out the actual reason that had caused my heart to diffuse. I was constantly going through the toughest phase of my life for few months but from yesterday it became the severe condition which led the strongest envy to be implanted in my heart with all possible powerful roots. The most miserable part of this situation was unable to supplicate the Creator…..which led towards the emptiness of heart, declined level of motivation, dead heart and hopeless face.
I was not because I didn’t know what to do in such conditions, but actually the miscreableness had overpowerd me.
But since Allah SWT wanted to guide me (Allah bless the moments I supplicated truely for my Hidaya) He bestowed me with this vary article which is exactly fitting upon what i was in need of since months.
It amazingly helped me to fade away the emptiness of my heart and reduce the negative response in return. Infact it lightened my heart. Jazakillah khair
