What was the Sunnah of Jesus Christ?
The other aspect of Prophet Jesus' (peace be upon him) message was his Sunnah-his way. Jesus (peace be upon him) said,
'... No one comes to the Father, except through me.'
This is the evidence for those who claim that Jesus (peace be upon him) is god. What this mean is that one cannot worship God except by the way, which is defined by prophets of God. Jesus (peace be upon him) emphasized his disciples/followers that they could only worship God by the way which he has taught them. Similarly, we find in the statements of the Last Messenger- Mohammad (ﷺ), where he has said very clearly 'I have left nothing which will bring you closer to God except that I have commanded you to do it.' He had pointed out the way and his way is the only way and it was the way of the prophets before him. As such, he (ﷺ) said,
“Whoever adds something new to the religion of Islam, it is not acceptable to God.”
So the way of the prophets is the only way to the God. So what remain is for us to look at the way of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). We find as is recorded in the New Testament that Jesus (peace be upon him) was circumcised. He was a Jew and he was circumcised. This was the part of his way. But today we find that most Christians do not get circumcised because of a rationale introduced by Paul. He claimed that the circumcision was the circumcision of the heart. That was his interpretation, but Jesus (peace be upon him) was not circumcised in the heart and he didn't say anything about the circumcision of the heart. He was circumcised, in the flesh. So in order to follow the way of Jesus (peace be upon him), one must be circumcised. And we see that the people around the world who insist on circumcision are those who call themselves to be Muslims. So we can say that they are following the way of Jesus (peace be upon him).
Furthermore, Jesus (peace be upon him) did not eat pork. He was a Jew and he DID NOT eat pork. He came, as he said, to fulfill the law, to uphold it, not to break it. So he didn't eat pork but unfortunately most people who call themselves Christians today, they not only eat it, but they raise it, they love it, they make cartoons about it. The pig is endeared. So we can say without a doubt that those who call themselves Christians are in fact not following Christ. And we find that the people who insist on not eating pork are those who call themselves Muslims. THEY are in fact following the way of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him).
Furthermore, we find in Matthew,
" And going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
When we look around the Christian world, we find the Christians kneeling down, holding their hands up in a posture which CANNOT be ascribed to Jesus (peace be upon him). And the only people we find consistently in their prayer falling down on their faces are those who call themselves Muslims.
So again, we can say without a doubt that the way of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) is not being followed by Christians but is in fact being followed by those who call themselves Muslims-those who submit completely to the way of God. And this falling down on face in prayer is not something new with Jesus (peace be upon him), but it is something which can be found in the practice of the earlier prophets. Prophet Abraham (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) in Old Testament,
“Abram fell facedown...”
As well as Prophet Moses and Aaron (عَلَيْهُمآ السَّلاَمُ) in Numbers,
“When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.”
As well as in Numbers,
“Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.”
".. suddenly Elijah met him; and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is that you, my lord Elijah?”
"Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.”
This is the way of the prophet. Allah says in the Qur'an
"Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah ... "
And it is only by that way that those who claim to follow Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) will gain the salvation which he brought in the message, and that was the message of all the prophets before him.
