What is the status of Gospel of Barnabas?
Barnabas was a man who is considered as one of the disciples of Jesus (Isa alaihisalaam). The Gospel of Barnabas has in it some of the correct information but it is no more authentic in its general historical sense than the other so-called Gospels. We cannot take it as the Gospel of Jesus because it even has offensive information that cannot be attributed to Jesus. It is considered unauthentic even though it contains prophecies of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and seems to confirm the true message of Jesus in terms of inviting people to the worship of God and not to worship Jesus. Moreover, we cannot convince the Christians through it as they too do not consider it to be one of the canonized gospels like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which are accepted by the whole Christendom unquestionably. Basically, it is not part of the Bible. Its status in Christianity is just like the status of weak and fabricated ahadith in Islam. In Islamic scholarship we disregard anyone who tries to prove his or her case on the basis of weak or fabricated hadith. Hence, the Christians do not consider the gospel of Barnabas authentic, and the Muslims also cannot consider it as the authentic Gospel of Jesus.
